The Good Doctor
Rehearsals proceed apace for Barbara Albury's production of Neil Simon's version of Chekhov short stories The Good Doctor. It will run from 5–22 August and is looking good. Performances are at 8pm Thursdays to Saturday and 4:30pm on Sundays.
We are still seeking the following props to get the right late 19th Century Russian ambience: a bowl or basin and jug for washing; lots of old ornate picture frames (any size but specially large ones); pince nez; a dentist's mirror and forceps; large silver coins, Russian news-papers; a big black overcoat. If you have any of the above and are prepared to lend them please ring Barbara on 6772 9529.
Barbara is also still looking for a sound operator.
To Russia with Love
In conjunction with The Good Doctor, and to celebrate the centenary of the death of Anton Chekhov, we're having a mini Russian cultural festival. This will include Vodka and Verse at Caffiends in Marsh Street on Thursday 22 July which includes readings, talks and music (as well as vodka and other refreshments), a screening of Dr Zhivago at the Belgrave cinema on Sunday 25 July at 5:30 of July including a talk on David Lean (the director) and, Playing Chekhov, a 2 hour Stanislavsky acting workshop with Sue Fell repeated on the first three Saturdays in August (cost $35, playhouse members $30).
Bookings/enquiries for any of the above including The Good Doctor: Armidale Visitors Centre 6772 4655.
AUDITIONS!
Our next two shows will be Lend Me a Tenor to be directed by Jean Freer and I Do! I Do! to be directed by Kristin Adair.
Lend Me a Tenor is a lovely farce about mistaken identity and impersonation (aren't they all?) and has a cast of 4 men and 4 women of varying ages. Two of the men need to be able to sing quite well since the tenor in the title is an opera singer. The season runs from 14 October.
Since Jean is away until just before auditions anyone wanting a to look at a script should contact Benjamin Thorn on 6772 5889.
I Do! I Do! is a two hander romantic musical that charts 50 years of a marriage. Two strong singers need to be able to dance and age from 20s to 60s on stage. Anyone interested must obtain copies of the music before auditioning from Kristin on 6771 4077. Season runs from 18 November.
Since there is an overlap in potential cast members (and rehearsals) auditions will be run together and you will only need to audition once for either or both shows.
Auditions will be on Sunday 25 July at the playhouse from 2pm (if you are only interested in I Do! I Do! come at 3:30pm) and Monday 26 July at 7pm (if only interested in Lend Me a Tenor come at 7:30).
Working Bee
After our last abortive attempt we have rescheduled the working bee to finish tidying and maintaining the playhouse (at least for the next show) for Saturday 3 July from 10am to 4pm. If you've got some time come along and join in (and probably have some fun as well).
Next Meeting
The next meeting of the committee to which everyone is welcome will be on Monday 5 July at the Playhouse at 7:30pm. Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month.
