| Armidale Playhouse Prompt - June 2005
Memories, Romance and Something Grittier
Our next show is a small one but should be a really interesting night in the theatre. Similar in concept to last years successful Poetry and Passion we've put together a new collection of varied works by local writers from Poetzinc. These will be staged in a one week season from 28-31 July.
The themes covered by the poems include the conflict between Aboriginal and white justice, war and the holocaust, rural blight, the vagaries of love and romance in different contexts and the nature of being and poetry. While many of the works are serious, many are lighter and some are extremely funny.
The "something grittier" of the title derives from the first work in the program by Val Chubb which presents a romantic poetic vision and then deconstructs it and with a complete rewrite transmogrifies it into a very different entity. It is a marvellous example of the creative process in action.
Directed by Benjamin Thorn, the program will incorporate music, lighting and projections to create a magical version of the poets' words.
Performances will be on 28, 29 and 30 July at 8pm with a matinee on the Saturday or Sunday to be confirmed. Tickets at the door $12/$8 concession but we have a special discount of $5 for school groups of over 10 students (contact Benjamin 67772 5889 for this).
Wanted
Memories, Romance, and Something Grittier is looking for a few props. If anyone could lend us a billycart, tricycle, scooter please let us know. We'd also like a stage manager! Contact Benjamin on 6772 5889 if you can help.
Cabaret
Our final show of the year in the last week of November and first weeks of December will be Cabaret to be directed by Barbara Albury and Gordon Cope.
It has already been cast and rehearsals start soon but there is still space for a couple of dancers and chorus if you are interested. Contact Barbara (6772 9529) or Gordon (6775 3963). Also contact them if you want to be involved in any other way: costumes, music, sound, set, publicity etc.
This Kandor and Ebb musical set in 1930s Berlin probably needs no introduction. It's full of fabulous characters and songs with a nice sinister undertone of the rise of Nazism.
We hope to be able to put together a really good and profitable show (which quite frankly we need!).
Working Bee
Thanks to everyone who came to the working bee on 19 June. We need to keep the playhouse in a reasonable shape so your help was greatly appreciated.
Next Meeting
The next meeting of the committee to which everyone is welcome will be on Monday 4 July at the Playhouse at 7:30pm. Meetings are normally on the first Monday of each month.
