Armidale Playhouse Prompt - November 2005

Cabaret

The time to come to the cabaret is fast approaching. The showground main pavilion has been trans-mogrified into the Kit Kat Klub in the Berlin of in the 1930s – sophisticated, hedonistic, decadent and the haunt of Europe’s rootless demimonde. The show is coming together and is looking terrific. Don’t miss it! The Kandor and Ebb musical Cabaret has great songs that seduce you before stripping off and revealing a disturbing subtext about the rise of Nazism.

Directed by Gordon Cope and Barbara Albury with a strong cast including Martin Mantle, Warren Bartik, Ruth Strutt, Byron Spencer, Betty Hall, Bob Thompson and Tracey James. Performances will be at the Armidale Showground in the main pavilion from 24 November until 10 December: Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm and a special matinee on Sunday 4 December at 4pm. Tickets are $20 ($15 concession) and are be available from Dymocks (6771 4558).

Cabaret front of house

Front of house for Cabaret is being organised by Isabel Strutt 6778 3239. Anyone interested in working on front of house should contact her as soon as possible.

Playhouse Future

As reported in the last newsletter the state of the playhouse infrastructure and the increasing demands of licensing authorities means that we are seriously looking at the future of the current playhouse. Gordon has been exploring the possibility of moving operations to the showground where Cabaret is being put on. Nothing has been decided yet but we need to establish a subcommittee to look closely at the various options, their costs and viability. Anyone interested in being part of such a subcommittee should come along to the next playhouse meeting on 5 December.

We also need to look intensely at our finances and ways of raising funds, whatever options about the future we take. Judith Lamb will be organising a committee to look into this and again anyone interested in participating should contact Judith or come to the next meeting.

Next Year’s Program

We have had various suggestions about what we can put on next year and it is now crunch time. We need to have firm proposals from potential directors and production teams to consider at the next meeting (5 December). If you’ve got a proposal come along so we can look at you!

Next Meeting

The next meeting of the committee to which everyone is welcome will be on Monday 5 December at the Playhouse at 7:30pm. Meetings are normally on the first Monday of each month.
