Armidale Playhouse Prompt - January 2006

Love Letters - Auditions

The first show of the year will be Love Letters to be directed by Jean Freer in March. This is a beautiful piece consisting of the letters between a man and a woman over their life time. Every-one who’s seen it raves about it. Since the letters are read out, the learning is less onerous than it might be, and the rehearsal period will be correspondingly short.

We need a man and a woman 30 years plus. Jean is also considering the possibility of double casting (each cast doing two shows a week for instance) so this might be a good show for people who can’t necessarily commit to full rehearsal and performance schedule.

Auditions are on Sunday 5 February at 3pm and Tuesday 7 February at 7:30pm at the Playhouse. For further information contact Jean 6772 8831 or Benjamin 6772 5889.

Cabaret

Cabaret was a terrific show which came together fantastically (despite one or two hairy moments in the rehearsal period). The acting was good with Martin Mantle and Ruth Strutt standouts, (in my view it’s the best thing Ruth has done) and the choreography by Tracey James was the best that I’ve seen in Armidale. The showground venue generally worked well with one or two sound problems which are probably not insurmountable (particularly if the raked seating is nearer the stage). Congratulations to everyone involved, particularly Gordon, Barbara, Terry Million and Tracey.

Vagina Monologues

After their successful weekend in the Playhouse last year, the Vagina Monologies are returning to Armidale and this time will appear at the showground pavilion. On 24 and 25 February. (Apart from anything else – being a really fun night in the theatre etc, this will be a good chance to see how the showground pavilion works for straight theatre.)

Playhouse Future

The possibility of moving the Playhouse to the showground is beginning to look like a viable option. Nothing of course has been decided yet and a sub-committee has been formed to look into the issue. The Playhouse membership will be given the chance to vote on this issue before anything is finalised.

Working Bee

Regardless of what happens we do need to tidy up and organise the current Playhouse, so there will be a working bee on Sunday 12 February at the Playhouse starting at 10am. Come along and have some fun an achieve something useful at the same time!

This Year’s Program

We have had various suggestions about what we can put after Love Letters and it is now crunch time. We need to have firm proposals from potential directors and production teams to consider at the next meeting (6 February). If you’ve got a proposal come along so we can look at you!

Next Meeting

The next meeting of the committee to which everyone is welcome will be on Monday 6 February at the Playhouse at 7:30pm. Meetings are normally on the first Monday of each month.
