Rhymes and Rumours on Stage
The works of local writers from Poetzinc will come alive in our first production of the year Rhymes and Rumours on Stage. This is the third collaboration between the Playhouse and Poetzinc in recent years and is again directed by Benjamin Thorn.
The cast of Bobbie Angelini, Jody Brash, Yvette Cases-Broehmer, Imogen Dean, Roslyn Manion, Minnie Maynard-Chambers, Brian Neville, Zoe Noble Fox, Merydyth Raue, Ben Sutton and Bob Thompson have been having a great time in rehearsals and it promises to be a fascinating and enjoyable show.
It starts with an egocentric noisy miner and runs through the whole human experience (schoolyard spats, neurotic parrots, suicide, camels as companion animals etc) to a geriatric bikie. While some are serious (and even black) others are very funny. All are enhanced by action, lighting, projections and music, and one piece by Bette Guy about attitudes to disability even has a simultaneous Auslan translation!
It adds up to a fascinating night in the theatre and is a great opportunity to see and hear what some of our local poets are doing.
Writers featured include Meredith Adams, Aline Christensen Val Chubb, Merle Goldsmith, Bette Guy Bernd Kusch, Ann Lax, Susan McMichael, Brian Neville, Maxine Ross, Greg Shortiss, Bob Thompson and Yve Louis.
There will be six performances at the New England Art Museum (NERAM), starting at 8pm on 23, 24, 29, 30 and 31 March and at 2:30pm on 25 March. Tickets are $10 and available at the door.
We’re still looking a lighting operator and front of house staff so if you’re interested contact Benjamin Thorn 6772 5889.
Sweeney Todd - Auditions
Stephen Sondheim's spectacularly gruesome music theatre piece Sweeney Todd will be our last show for the year in November. It will be directed by Jean Freer with Bruce Menzies as musical director.
Auditions for the two lead parts - Sweeney and Mrs Lovett will be held on the 4th of April as both roles are extremely demanding both dramatically and musically and will need a longer period of familiarity if these characters are to do full justice to their roles
Sweeney Todd - Baritone G (F) to G,
Mrs Lovett - Alto F to E.
Auditions for the rest of the company will be held on 17th & 18th of July.
Favourite Shorts
Don’t forget Favourite Shorts coming at the St Kilda Hotel 7-27 May.
Next Meeting
The next meeting of the committee to which everyone is welcome will be on Monday 2 April at the Playhouse at 7:30pm. Meetings are normally on the first Monday of each month.
