Armidale Playhouse Prompt - July 2007

Sweeney Todd
- Auditions

Our final show of the year, Stephen Sondheim's spectacularly gruesome music theatre piece that will put you off both haircuts and pies, looks like being a ripper. It will be directed by Jean Freer with musical direction by Bruce Menzies. The two main roles of Sweeney and Mrs Lovett have been cast. However auditions for the rest of the company will be held on 17th & 18th of July at 7pm at Ben Venue School Hall. Any one interested should contact Robyn Bradley for the music on 6772 6468.

Vincent in Brixton

Vincent rehearsals are well underway and it should be a fabulous looking glimpse into the early life of an artist almost everyone has heard of (if only because Alan Bond paid far too much of other people’s money for Irises). (Van Gogh is also probably the most mispronounced artist of all time with at least four different pronunciations commonly used.) Barbara Albury is directing this award winning play, which will be presented in the Packsaddle Studio underneath NERAM. Jean Freer is co-ordinating front of house so if your interested in helping out ring her on 6772 8831. Performances are from 23 August till 9 September and tickets are available from Dymocks.

Stage One

The Playhouse has acquired a 60% interest in the Stage One Creative drama school. Stage One was founded and run for many years by Astrid Blake. The acquisition has many potential benefits for the playhouse, including providing a youth arm, and access to rehearsal and performance spaces in the Old Teacher’s College. Stage One Creative is a separate company and the Playhouse has the right to appoint three members of the board of the company. As an interim measure Warren Bartik, Gordon Cope and Judith Lamb are acting as directors but we would like to formalise this at the next Playhouse meeting. If you are interested in being on the board please come to the next Playhouse meeting on 6 August or contact Gordon (0403 392 531) to express interest.

Even if you don’t want the responsibility of being a board member you can still get involved by adopting a class and seeing just what is going on in the school.

AGM

The Annual General Meeting of the Playhouse will be on Monday 3 September. Think about whether you’d like to get involved since we always need new enthusiastic people.

Next Meeting

The next meeting of the committee to which everyone is welcome will be on Monday 6 August at the Playhouse at 7:30pm. Meetings are normally on the first Monday of each month.
