Armidale Playhouse Prompt - April 2009
AUDITIONS: Outside Edge
From Richard Harris, the author of Stepping Out a play about another small group, a social cricket team. Whilst it is superficially about cricket, it actually has little to do with the game and is more about the character’s lives and relationships off-pitch as the match happens off-stage.
Mark Bourne will direct the play which will be performed in St Mary’s Hall, Rusden St, 28 August to 11 September.
Auditions for five men and four women will be on Sunday 24 May at 2pm at the Playhouse.
Favourite Shorts
This year’s series of short plays and poetry at the New England Hotel had good and appreciative audiences. One good aspect was the involvement of a number of people new to the playhouse. Congratulations to all involved and we’ll do it all again next year.
Stage One
Stage One Creative has moved its operations to the Playhouse. This mean that the old building is getting some consistent use and it is more economical.
Information on class times - Amy Cook 6771 1112.
Members Nights
So that playhouse members can get together socially without the constraints of working on a production we’re planning a series of members nights. The first three of these will be video nights showing the videos of the three weeks of this years Favourite Shorts and after that we plan a few play readings.
Dates for the first three nights are:
Friday 8th May - 7:30pm for 8pm - "Favourite Shorts 2009: Week One"
Friday 12th June - 7:30pm for 8pm - "Favourite Shorts 2009: Week Two"
Friday 3rd July - 7:30pm for 8pm - "Favourite Shorts 2009: Week Three"
Playhouse Renovations
We’ve had a series of working bees at the Playhouse to make it more attractive and usable. At this stage it is probably not possible to make it a licensed theatre again (as the requirement for one metre clear passages and doors presents certain structural problems).
We will however be painting the exterior of the Playhouse starting this weekend (9th May) - please register interest with Diana or Jim.
Into the Woods
Our final show for the year will be Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods directed by Jean Freer at the TAS Creative Arts Centre. Information night at TAS 2nd July. Auditions 11th and 12th July from 2pm at TAS Creative Arts Centre.
Other Upcoming Shows
ADMS has two shows in quick succession both of which should be worth seeing:
HMS Pinafore. Directed by Mike Gibson opens on the 21 May (thorough to 6 June) at the UNE Arts Theatre. Tickets at Dymocks 6771 4558.
Blood Brothers. Directed by George Torbay (this is a play not a musical) it runs 19 – 27 June at the TAS Creative Arts Centre. Tickets at Dymocks 6771 4558.
Another interesting performance combining live music (jazz/classical fusion or really just wildly eclectic style) and video is the Sunwrae Ensemble at the Town Hall 7:30 pm Saturday 16 May.
Next Meeting
The next playhouse committee to which everyone is welcome will be at 7:30pm on 1 June at the Playhouse. Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month.
